Caddo Commission Streamlines Process to Bring Faster Internet Network throughout Caddo Parish

Parish of Caddo becomes the first Parish Government in Louisiana to move forward with laying the foundation for the evolution to 5G internet technology.
Caddo, La., April 8, 2018 — The Caddo Parish Commission has unanimously moved forward with a streamlined approached to delivering faster internet network speeds, and is helping meet the needs of improved wireless connectivity and service at their facilities and nearby areas throughout Caddo Parish.
Resolution No 25 of 2018 by Commissioner Steven Jackson (D- District 3) authorizes the Caddo Parish administration to begin negotiating with telecommunication companies to place small cell facilities on parish owned facilities. The resolution is a streamlined approach compared to the initial City of Shreveport's approach that consisted of a cumbersome 70 page ordinance requiring telecommunication companies to pay $10,000 - $14,000 per cell tower per company in application fees and for hiring consultants. “Safe access to the internet and faster speeds are needed improved services, create smart city/parish, and improve the quality of life throughout the parish,” said Jackson. "Deployment of this technology help smart cities support small business, large industry, STEM education, smart public safety, health care delivery, tele-medicine and other segments of our local economy. This streamlined approached will help bring faster connectivity than ever before in areas of Caddo Parish”
Caddo Commissioner Mario Chavez (R-District 10) who chairs the Parish's Long Range Planning Committee commended the effort as, " progressive and business friendly." "We are pushing Caddo Parish to the front of the line in the advancement of innovative thinking in the state. We tend to fear what we don't know, but the acceptance of the new 5G technology is nothing more than a large Wifi network that I hope not only saturates our down town area with high speed connectivity for all users but launches the proverbial signal flare for regional companies to see that we are open for business," said Chavez.
With 4G LTE service, customers will experience better network connectivity while streaming videos, sharing on social media or texting family and friends. This enhancement will also support economic development in the area by improving connectivity for business customers. This helps residents stay connected while getting the best possible experience over their carrier’s network. Additionally, the Parish hopes to partner with private businesses and telecommunication companies to install small cells at their facilities to increase capacity and delivery.
