SHREVEPORT, LA — State Representative Steven Jackson has formally requested that Governor Jeff Landry and Louisiana State Police Superintendent Colonel Robert Hodges establish a specialized State Police presence in downtown Shreveport during weekend evenings.
Jackson’s request comes after a series of violent altercations downtown that have raised concerns about safety and the public perception of the area. He emphasized that the State of Louisiana has made a major investment in downtown Shreveport, including the new $110 million State Office Building, with additional public and private projects under development.
“We’ve seen tremendous progress downtown, but incidents like these jeopardize the sense of safety we’ve worked hard to restore,” said Representative Jackson. “The State has already invested heavily in this corridor, and we must protect that investment by ensuring that residents, visitors, and businesses feel secure.”
In his letter to the Governor and Colonel Hodges, Jackson noted that the State’s total direct and indirect investment in the immediate downtown area could reach half a billion dollars by the end of 2026. He urged coordination among the Louisiana State Police, Shreveport Police Department, Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Shreveport City Marshal’s Office to develop a unified weekend enforcement and rapid-response plan.
“We have an opportunity to get ahead of this problem before it grows,” Jackson added. “A proactive and coordinated approach will send a clear message that public safety is a priority and that disorderly behavior will not be tolerated in our city’s core.”
The initiative aims to reassure investors, protect state and local assets, and help create a downtown environment that is safe, vibrant, and welcoming for all.
