Assignment Strengthens Northwest Louisiana’s Voice on Tax Policy and the State’s Multi-Billion Dollar Capital Outlay Program

Shreveport — Rep. Steven Jackson has been appointed by Speaker Phillip R. DeVillier to serve on the Louisiana House Committee on Ways and Means. “I’m grateful to Speaker DeVillier for the confidence and trust,” Jackson said. “I know there are so many qualified members to select from, and I do not take this opportunity lightly.”

As one of the Legislature’s primary fiscal committees, Ways and Means shapes Louisiana’s tax policy and revenue structure. These decisions directly impact whether families stay, whether businesses expand, and whether our state remains competitive.

As a first-term Democratic legislator, Rep. Jackson has signaled a willingness to support responsible tax reform that strengthens working families and enhances Louisiana’s economic competitiveness.

“For another year, Louisiana has lost population, and Shreveport-Bossier has felt that impact,” Jackson said. “Meanwhile, regional cities like Dallas and Oklahoma City continue to grow. We have to make decisions that encourage people to stay, businesses to invest, and families to build their future here.”

Jackson also highlighted the committee’s connection to the capital outlay process, which helps craft Louisiana’s multi-billion dollar capital outlay program that funds critical infrastructure and community projects across the state. “Capital outlay is how we turn tax dollars into real projects like roads, water systems, hospitals, and community facilities,” Jackson said. “With billions of dollars in authorized projects across Louisiana over multiple years, Northwest Louisiana must compete and win in that process. We have to be at the table to bring our tax dollars home.”

Jackson also expressed appreciation to Chairman Ryan Bourriaque and the staff of the House Transportation, Highways and Public Works Committee for their leadership and mentorship while serving as a member of that committee.

“Traveling the state during the DOTD Roadshow gave me a deeper understanding of the unique value each region brings to Louisiana,” Jackson said. “It is an experience every legislator should have at least once.”
